Teachers in workshop session, Paramakatoi, Guyana—Larry Lemieux

Larry Lemieux, Calgary

Travelling for up to three days through dense jungle on foot, from dawn to dusk, along rain-soaked, muddy and hilly trails, to attend a Project Overseas workshop on improving one’s teaching skills is a journey most Albertans would be reluctant to undertake. Yet, 90 Amerindian teachers, ranging in age from 17 to 55, did just that in the remote, isolated region of Paramakatoi, Guyana, this past July. Many participants have no teacher training; CTF’s program provided teachers with their first opportunity to develop teaching strategies.

Without electricity and teaching resources that we take for granted, it was truly humbling to imagine the sacrifices these teachers make daily. This project reinforced the benefits of working in partnership with our teaching colleagues in Guyana.
