Historic pension agreement reached

ATA President Frank Bruseker and Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach announced on November 15, 2007, that an agreement in principle to resolve the unfunded liability of the Teachers’ Pension Plan had been reached. The memorandum of agreement is the result of intensive talks between the Association and the government over the past few months.

Provincial Executive Council recommended the memorandum of agreement to an Emergent Representative Assembly, which was held in Edmonton on Saturday, November 24, 2007. A provincial ratification vote will follow, and all collective agreements must be in place by January 31, 2008.

The text of the memorandum of agreement is featured on pages 4 and 5 of this special issue of the ATA News. Questions and answers about the unfunded liability, the memorandum of agreement, bargaining and lump sum payments to teachers are on pages 6 and 7. An article discussing the Alberta average weekly earnings appears on page 8. Finally, photos and comments of delegates attending the Emergent Representative Assembly appear on page 7.
