Students fried in Louisiana

For three days in August, students in Louisiana riding buses to school were subjected to temperatures ranging from 37.78 degrees Celsius (100 degrees Fahrenheit) to 46.67 degrees Celsius (116 degrees Fahrenheit). The Caddo Federation of Teachers and Support Personnel measured the temperature and humidity ranges inside school buses during the first three days of the new school year, August 14–16. Despite the union’s urging that the start of school be pushed back, school officials insist on setting the calendar earlier to get a start on instructional time before high-stakes testing in March. "We’re forced to do this for the convenience of the bureaucrats," says Caddo Federation President Jackie Lansdale. "We’re putting their convenience over the safety of the children we’re transporting. If you did this to a dog, you’d be cited for cruelty."
