Next fall, when students at Edmonton's Académie Vimy Ridge Academy learn the ropes, they'll have a principal who knows a thing or two about reaching new heights (and descending from them!).

As part of the school's promotion, Wilma Bayko, the new school's principal, rappelled from the fourth floor of Edmonton Public School's Centre for Education on February 2. "I decided that it was a way for me to connect with our future students and for me to experience some of the activities that will be part of the Academy's curriculum," said Bayko.

Opening in September 1999, L'Académie Vimy Ridge Academy will be the first school of its kind in Canada to focus on Canadian studies while offering cadet and dance programs. Students will have the opportunity to participate in a rigorous academic environment while pursuing cadet activities, like band and drill instruction, or professional dance training. The Academy will be dedicated to emphasizing leadership, citizenship, self-discipline, physical fitness and bilingualism.

The Academy will be located within Bonnie Doon School and is in partnership with the Canadian Cadet movement, the Canadian Armed Forces and the Edmonton School of Ballet. All programs will follow the Alberta Education curriculum.
