New year brings new staff officer to Government

January 17, 2012

Shelley Magnusson is the newest executive staff officer in the Government program area. Appointed to the position by Provincial Executive Council in December 2011, Magnusson’s first day on the job was January 3.

In addition to superior planning, communication and facilitation skills, Magnusson brings to the Association a broad scope of experience. Most recently, she was employed as the manager of outreach and education programs with the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists, and Geophysicists of Alberta. Prior to that, she was a program manager at Alberta Education, where her focus was on senior high English language arts and literacy.

Magnusson’s dynamic career path began at Summitview Middle School, in Grande Cache, where she started as a teacher and advanced to the position of school principal. During that period, she was also involved in activities at the Association level and with her local. While a member of Grande Cache Local No. 54 (later amalgamated into Evergreen Local No. 11) she held the positions of PD committee chair, vice-president and president. She also represented her local on the convention planning board and was a member of the Association’s English Language Arts Council.

Magnusson’s responsibilities will include handling the Association’s activities related to public relations, publicity, promoting public education and enhancing the image of teachers.
