Robert Twerdoclib is the winner of a byelection held in the Central North district, winning over James Hansen by a count of 235 votes to 38.
The result means that Twerdoclib will remain on Provincial Executive Council as a district representative after serving the past four years as a vice-president. He ran unsuccessfully for the presidency in the general PEC election held earlier this year, coming second to Greg Jeffery.
Twerdoclib previously served four years as Central North district representative, so his new role isn’t really new.
“I’m delighted to see the level of support from my home district,” he said in reaction to his byelection win.
As a district representative, Twerdoclib said his day-to-day work will shift from a provincial focus to working with the six locals in his district. Through mentorship, strengthening leadership capacity within Central North will be a key aspect of his role as DR, he said, since four of the locals in his district have a new president.
“With my background with the Association and my steady hand, I’m looking forward to assisting all of the locals, but particularly our newly elected local presidents,” he said.
Other areas of focus will be helping with the upcoming round of local bargaining that will unfold, given that a central table agreement has been ratified, and working to improve member engagement, he said.
The byelection was necessitated when incumbent district representative Paul McCann decided not to run for re-election and no other candidates came forward. Twerdoclib will begin his two-year term on July 1.
“Thank you for the support,” he said to those who voted for him. “I’m looking forward to the next two years.”
