The Alberta Teachers’ Association is inviting nominations for the office of district representative for the Central North district. This byelection is a result of the Association receiving no nominations for this position during the recently concluded PEC election.
About Central North
The Association divides the province into 11 geographic districts, one of which is Central North. This district is represented on the Association’s Provincial Executive Council (PEC) by a single district representative. Within the district’s boundaries are more than 2,400 teachers employed by six school jurisdictions and belonging to six correlating ATA locals.
Who is eligible to run?
To be eligible to run in the 2017 Central North byelection you must not be in receipt of an Alberta Teachers’ Retirement Fund pension and you must either
hold an active ATA membership and be employed by any of the six school boards in the geographic district of Central North;
hold an associate ATA membership and be employed by a school authority in the geographic district of Central North; or
hold an associate ATA membership, be employed by an employer that is not affiliated with an ATA local, and reside in the geographic district of Central North.
Nomination deadline
The deadline for nominations is May 15, 2017, at 5 p.m.
Election and acclamation
If the Association receives nominations from two or more candidates, a byelection will take place. Voting will take place online from June 1 to June 8, with results announced June 9.
In the event that only one nomination is received, the nominee will be deemed elected by acclamation.
Term of office
The successful candidate for district representative Central North will serve on Provincial Executive Council for a two-year term beginning July 1, 2017.
Remuneration
The Association enters into agreements with school boards to ensure district representatives have the time needed to serve on Council (up to 100 days release time) and conduct Council-related functions.
In addition to the release time, district representatives are also provided honoraria and expense coverage related to Council meetings and other related duties and activities.
About PEC
Provincial Executive Council (PEC) is the group of 20 teachers who are responsible for guiding the business of the Alberta Teachers’ Association. It includes five table officers (ATA president, two vice-presidents, past-president and executive secretary) and 15 district representatives. Its table officers and district representatives are elected to office by ATA members and serve two-year terms. Byelections for positions are held when vacancies occur before a Council term ends.
Members of PEC
are teachers;
meet as a council at least nine times each
year, including at the Annual Representative Assembly, which is attended by more than 400 teacher delegates who debate and set Association policy;
make decisions affecting the budgets, policies and strategic direction of the ATA;
serve on internal (ATA) and external committees and subgroups, and;
engage in professional development as part of their duties.

Posted on the Association’s website is the complete call for the nominations package, containing essential election information, schedules and forms. On April 25, hard copies of the package were sent to ATA local secretaries and ATA school representatives across the geographic district of Central North for the purpose of sharing the information with colleagues in their locals and schools.
