From tower to tasty

Back in November, students in kindergarten to Grade 2 at Leslieville Elementary School purchased a tower garden and planted a variety of seeds: lettuce, spinach, kale, mint, parsley, basil, celery, tomatoes and cucumbers. The students conducted weekly observations of the plants’ progress, learning how quickly different plants grow and how much food they can produce. On Jan. 20, they had a salad party, harvesting and sampling what they’d grown.

Grade 2 teacher Brenda Lewis reported that the project encouraged students to explore their range of tastes, encouraged them to share their experiences with their families and created a sense of community between students and classrooms.
