Sean Brown joins Teacher Welfare

November 17, 2015 ATA News Staff

Former local president and district rep one of four new executives

Sean Brown, a teacher with Greater St. Albert Catholic Schools, will join the Teacher Welfare (TW) program area as an executive staff officer effective Dec. 1. Provincial Executive Council approved the appointment at its October meeting.

Brown began his teaching career with Grande Prairie District Catholic Schools and spent four years there before making the move to St. Albert. Over the course of his career, he has garnered experience in the roles of vice-principal, lead teacher, technology facilitator and network administrator.

Brown’s field knowledge of teacher workload and conditions of practice were viewed as assets to the TW program area, along with his planning, implementation and presentation skills. Also valuable will be his experience with the Association at the local and provincial levels, through which he has learned much about the dynamics and differences of various education stakeholder groups.

At the local level, Brown served as chair of the economic policy committee and negotiating subcommittee for Greater St. Albert Catholic Local 23. Duties on those committees overlapped with his terms as local vice-president (2006–09) and president (2009–13). Since 2013, Brown has been a member of Provincial Executive Council, fulfilling the role of district representative for Edmonton District. He resigned from Council to accept this TW appointment, and his resignation from Council necessitates a byelection to fill the vacancy.

TW staff members help teachers attain economic conditions and conditions of practice that make possible the best level of professional service. They provide members with advice on collective bargaining, interpretation and application of collective agreements, grievance procedures, group benefit plans, pensions, employment insurance and other matters. ❚
