Former Edmonton Eskimo Hec Pothier is all smiles after having his name added to the team’s wall of honour at Commonwealth Stadium on Oct. 13.
What could an elementary school principal possibly have in common with an NFL hall of fame quarterback and a former Alberta premier? Visit Commonwealth Stadium and you will see all three on the Edmonton Eskimos wall of honour.
Hector Pothier, principal at Kameyosek School in Edmonton, was enshrined on the wall at halftime during the Esks’ game against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Oct. 13. He joined Warren Moon, Don Getty and 26 other outstanding Eskimos players who have received the honour over the last 30-plus years.
Pothier and Moon were teammates on the Eskimos team that won the Grey Cup five years in a row from 1978 to 1982. Pothier didn’t play with Getty, who quarterbacked the Eskimos from 1955 to 1964, but he still experienced his leadership, as all Albertans did, when Getty was premier of Alberta from 1985 to 1992.
Pothier retired after the 1989 season and a stellar career, but take one look at his “Principal’s Message” on the Kameyosek School website and you see the concept of team remains with him.
“Together, as a team we form the Golden Triangle of Support for our children. As the base, parents and teachers offer a strong foundation to the children at the apex of the triangle.”❚
