Member Services co-ordinator Brian Andrais will take over as associate executive secretary next January.

Member Services co-ordinator to take over for Dennis Theobald

Brian Andrais has been appointed the next associate executive secretary of the Alberta Teachers’ Association.

Currently the co-ordinator of the Member Services program area, Andrais will replace Dennis Theobald, who will take over as executive secretary when Gordon Thomas retires next February. Andrais will begin his new role in January.

“I’m really looking forward to working with Council, everyone at the Association and doing my best for the Alberta Teachers’ Association,” he said.

Among many other duties, the associate executive secretary is heavily involved in the operation of Provincial Executive Council, acts as co-ordinator of the Government program area, is responsible for Association representation to other provincial education organizations and serves on several internal committees.

Joining executive staff in 2007, Andrais spent time in Member Services and Teacher Welfare before being named Member Services co-ordinator in 2011.

He said he’ll bring strong skills in administration and relationship building to his new position, adding that he’s looking forward to the new challenge and to forging a partnership with Theobald.

“I think Dennis and I will work very well together,” Andrais said. “I think we’re similar but we’re very different in many ways and I’m looking forward to developing that relationship in a very collaborative fashion.”

Andrais began his career in 1989 as an elementary teacher in New Sarepta. He later became a school counsellor, assistant principal and principal at schools in the Black Gold Regional School Division.

Prior to being named to executive staff, Andrais served as a member of his local’s Economic Policy Committee and chaired its Negotiating Subcommittee. He also served on the Association’s Complaint Appeals Committee and Professional Conduct Committee. He holds a BA in communications from Simon Fraser University, a BEd from the University of Alberta and an MBA in educational leadership from Royal Roads University. ❚
