About 450 teachers attended the Beginning Teachers’ Conference at the Fantasyland Hotel in Edmonton Sept. 25 and 26.

Designed to help prepare new teachers for a successful career, the conference offers a variety of sessions on topics ranging from culturally diverse classrooms to student resilience to professional growth plans.

Calgary’s Beginning Teachers’ Conference took place Oct. 1 to 3, with more than 300 southern Alberta teachers registered.

First-year elementary teacher Karson Campbell, a member of Elk Island Local No. 28, said his first month on the job has been focused on soaking up the expertise of colleagues in his school.

"Everyone has been really great at supporting me. I’ve latched on to one colleague like I’m his little brother. He helps me with lesson plans all the time," Campbell said.

Despite the fact that his workday preparations begin at 6:30 a.m., Campbell said he’s energetic and excited about the year ahead.
