Teacher... Leader... Superhero!

Teachers from all across the province are involved in the work of the Alberta Teachers’ Association in various capacities. Such volunteer efforts by members are critical to the effective operation of the Association.

How long have you been teaching?
Nine years.

Why did you become a teacher?
I was born to be a teacher. It is in the blood — a passion I can’t deny. There is nothing else in the world that I would rather do.

Current ATA subgroup role
President of Evergreen Local No. 11.

What are your main responsibilities?
Everything.

What do you enjoy most about this work?
Networking with my colleagues and other education stakeholders. The professional development I get from just being in this position is awesome.

What other roles have you held with the Association?
School representative, Economic Policy Committee member, DEHR committee member, Annual Representative Assembly delegate, local vice-president, Teacher Board Advisory Committee, C2 lead.

Why do you do this work? Why is it important?
I do this work because it interests me and I believe it is my professional obligation to serve my association. I love the networking, I love the work and I feel like I am contributing to something important. The people I get to work with and for are amazing.

How (or why) did you first become involved in Association work?
The local president asked me to come to a meeting, so I did. I was hooked from there.

So, so many to choose from. The Magical Sleepover, published by my Grade 3 class two years ago!

Fishing

The power to read people’s thoughts

What fictional character are you most like and why?
Winnie-the-Pooh. I’m cuddly!

What was your first car?
A little Mazda something-or-other. I paid a whopping $400 for it. ❚
