Teacher’s pet

December 2, 2014

We asked on our Facebook page for teachers to send in pictures of their pets along with short answers to two questions.

Name: Sherpa

Breed: Himalayan

Owner: Missy Steeves, English and social studies teacher at Lilian Schick School in Bon Accord

What makes your pet special?

“She is legitimately the love of my life. When I first met my husband, years ago, I found out on the first date he was allergic to cats and told him he needs to figure it out or move on because the cat was here first. Sherpa comes when you call her, loves  treats and is always up for a cuddle after a long day.”

How does your pet help you in your profession?

“She is a huge part of my life and I like to build relationships with students by sharing my passions. In our classroom, I encourage everyone to bring in pictures of their pets on the first day so that they have a piece of home with them at all times.

“I've also had students move in and out of our town frequently. On one such occasion, I found out a student moved across Alberta and just so happened to land in my friend's classroom. The first thing she said to him when she found out he came from Bon Accord was, ‘your teacher was the cat lady, right?’ Instant connections!”
