The Alberta Teachers’ Association

The calendars of teachers fill up fast, but mark down this date — March 23, 2015. That is the date set for the Provincial Executive Council (PEC) election, and all Alberta teachers are encouraged to participate in the democratic process that culminates in the big day.

There are 20 positions on PEC, the body that leads and transacts the business of the Alberta Teachers’ Association on behalf of its 40,000-plus members. With the exception of the ­Association executive secretary and past president, members of PEC are elected for two-year terms.

With terms for current PEC members set to expire on June 30, 2015, the following positions will be open for nomination:

President (one position elected) and vice-president (two positions elected)

The president is the official spokesperson and chief representative of the Association. He or she is also chair of PEC and other designated committees.

Vice-presidents (VPs), along with the past president, also chair or act on major administrative committees and share in representing the Association. In the absence of the president, VPs act in that capacity.

The president and VPs, the executive secretary and the past president also form the Table Officers Committee (TOC), which meets 15 to 20 times each year between the regular PEC meetings. The TOC makes administrative decisions in accordance with guidelines previously determined by PEC, takes action in emergencies or when time is of the essence, and represents the Association in face-to-face meetings with the Alberta government and other bodies.

District representative (15 positions elected)

District representatives (DRs) ascertain the views of Association members and act as resources to ATA locals within the geographical districts they are elected to represent. There are 11 districts in Alberta. Nine districts are represented by a single DR. Two districts — Calgary City and Edmonton McMurray —are each represented by three DRs.
