Organizers are once again preparing to mount the Alberta Teachers’ Association’s Annual Representative Assembly, which is slated to run from Saturday, May 16 through Monday, May 18 at Edmonton’s Westin.
The annual policy-setting event will include more than 425 teacher delegates, along with members of Provincial Executive Council (PEC).
Matters on the agenda include the Association’s proposed 2015/16 budget as well as more than 200 resolutions generated by ATA locals and PEC. This year’s resolutions encompass a variety of topics, including diploma exams, provincial election candidate spending, personal donations to provincial election campaigns, students’ use of reference materials during provincial assessments and inclusive education. A complete list of the resolutions appeared in the Resolutions Bulletin in the March 10 edition of the ATA News.
“ARA is a marathon event that exemplifies what true democracy is all about,” said Association president Mark Ramsankar. “I get excited for it every year.”
The weekend will also include the presentation of two Honorary Membership Awards (the Association’s highest honour). This year’s recipients will be Fran Galbraith, a former vice-president of PEC and the Canadian Teachers’ Federation, and Larry Liffiton, former president of the Calgary Public Teachers Local No. 38.
