Calgary school cooks up kindness

January 27, 2015
Teacher Crystal Haddon and Grade 5 student Jasmine Barcena of Calgary’s St. Damien School show off a meal they’re preparing as part of the school’s Cooking Up Kindness program.

Another Alberta school that’s combining food and community service is Calgary’s St. Damien, which started its Cooking Up Kindness program last year. The program sees Grade 5 and 6 students prepare meals for families who are experiencing illness, grieving the death of a loved one or even celebrating the birth of a new baby.

“I think it’s really powerful for kids,” said principal Susan Robichaud. “Some of the kids [who] have had very little success academically … just blossomed as they were cooking. It was really quite amazing.” ❚
