Capital city to host 92nd Annual Representative Assembly

More than 450 teachers from across Alberta will gather in Edmonton over the Victoria Day long weekend (May 16–18) for the Alberta Teachers’ Association’s 92nd Annual Representative Assembly (ARA).

Teachers will discuss policy and set the Association’s 2009/10 operating budget (details were featured in the ATA News, April 21, 2009). During the three-day event, more than 165 resolutions covering curriculum; finance; working conditions for professional service; school administration; technology; and diversity, equity and human rights will be debated. Of special interest will be recommendations stemming from the report of the ATA’s Committee on Outreach Schools. As well, business arising from last year’s ARA—a review of the teachers’ pension plan’s current pension benefit entitlements—will be presented.

Resolutions to be debated at ARA were featured in the Resolutions Bulletin, published in the ATA News, March 10, 2009. Resolutions adopted at ARA constitute the policy of the Association and are published in the Members’ Handbook.

During Saturday’s opening session, the Association’s Honorary Membership and the Public Education Award will be presented. Honorary membership will be conferred on Bauni Mackay, former ATA president (1993–99). The ATA’s Public Education Award will be presented to Today’s Parent.
