Celebrating Alberta’s Centennial

Children’s art is creation

An art class in 1954

The above photograph first appeared in the ATA Magazine (December 1954) and accompanied an article by Jessie Todd entitled "Art and the Classroom Teacher." In the article, Todd warned that spelling and reading programs alone could not succeed without the influence of schools’ art programs. "Children’s art is wonderful. It hasn’t been spoiled by too much academic teaching. It is often close to the work of artists," Todd wrote. —Photo from ATA Archives
