The Edmonton Grads

Edmonton Grads with coach J. Percy Page

The photo of the Edmonton Grads with coach J. Percy Page is part of a new exhibit at the Provincial Museum of Alberta titled Queens of the Court: The Edmonton Grads. Between 1915 and 1940, a squad of young graduates from two Edmonton commercial high schools stormed basketball courts across North America and Europe, including Olympic meets in Paris (1924), Amsterdam (1928), Los Angeles (1932) and Berlin (1936). To this day, the Edmonton Grads, who held the world women’s basketball title for 17 consecutive years, are considered one of the greatest sports teams in Canadian history. The team’s coach, John Percy Page, was principal of Edmonton’s McDougall Commercial High School and the commercial section of Victoria High School.

Visitors to the exhibit, which runs from November 6, 2004, to June 26, 2005, will experience first-hand accounts of life as an Edmonton Grad through film clips and artifacts from the museum’s collection, the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame, the Edmonton Public School Archives and private individuals.
