Alberta Education
states in its website that innovation in education depends on high quality research being carried out in four ways: (1) through Alberta Initiative for School Improvement action research projects, (2) by faculties of education, (3) by stakeholder groups like the ATA and (4) by charter schools. Charter schools have been in place in Alberta since 1994 as part of an initiative to provide choice in the education system. The government says that they were developed to support and encourage educational innovation and to disseminate the findings of research conducted in these schools. Currently, the government is looking at developing a vision for the future of charter schools. The government has produced a
concept paper on the future of charters
and a background information document titled
Action on Research and Innovation: The Future of Charter Schools in Alberta
. The Association has responded to this paper with its own
response
