The Alberta Teachers’ Association has issued the following statement in regards to concerns raised about Kristopher Wells’s speaking appearance at the Palliser District Teachers’ Convention.
“Dr Kristopher Wells is a prominent and well-regarded expert in the field of education and gender issues. The Association has worked with Dr Wells extensively on providing supports and resources for teachers and schools that ensure that sexual and gender minority students and staff feel safe, welcomed, included and supported in schools. We have confidence in the quality of his work and in his professionalism.
The current campaign to discredit Dr Wells is driven by an organisation that lobbies against virtually all initiatives designed to support sexual and gender minority students. It is without merit.
The law in Alberta requires school boards, teachers, students and parents to contribute to welcoming, caring, respectful and safe learning environment that respects diversity and fosters a sense of belonging. Wells’s presentation is focussed on helping teachers meet these legal obligations and in the process make all students feel supported in schools.
Teachers have professional and contractual obligations to attend Teachers have professional and contractual obligations to attend teachers’ convention. As always, teachers are able to choose from a variety of sessions at teachers’ convention to best suit their own professional learning goals.”
