Caretaker, Light Duty

Permanent Full-Time 

The Alberta Teachers' Association, as the professional organization of teachers, promotes and advances public education, safeguards standards of professional practice and serves as the advocate for its members.

The Light Duty Caretaker assists in the maintenance of a clean and safe work environment and works collaboratively with afternoon building staff. Reporting to the Building Supervisor and working directly under the Chargehand, this position performs general cleaning duties, assists with building safety and security, and completes other duties as assigned.  Specifically, this position is responsible for:

  • Performing general cleaning duties such as sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, emptying garbage cans and recycle bins, disinfecting and restocking washrooms and meeting rooms, and cleaning windows and windowsills up to and including above shoulder height; 
  • Assisting with building safety and security;
  • Reporting and recording safety concerns and emergencies; 
  • Locking doors and entrances at appropriate times as assigned; and
  • Acting as backup to other building staff as assigned.


  • Some related experience and a thorough knowledge of standard cleaning procedures, chemicals, products and equipment;
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team;
  • The ability to work with minimal supervision;
  • A strong customer service focus including good communication skills; 
  • Problem solving, organizational and time management skills;
  • Completion of WHMIS;
  • Demonstrated commitment to a safe work environment including the ability to follow safe work practices; 
  • Good motor coordination and manual dexterity is required;
  • Must be able to stand, walk, bend, push, pull and reach, up to and including above shoulder height; and
  • Must be able to lift up to 10 kilograms and push up to 30 kilograms. 

Salary: This position offers a competitive starting salary of $42,588 to a maximum of $52,497 (after 3 years) plus a full range of employer-paid benefits.

Hours of Work: 35 hours per week, Monday through Friday (4:00 pm to 11:30 pm) 

Work Location: Barnett House (11010 142 Street NW), Edmonton
