Kurt Moench appointed new Associate Coordinator of Member Services

Kurt MoenchKurt Moench, a Member Services staff officer at the Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA), has been appointed to the position of Associate Coordinator, Member Services, in the ATA’s Southern Alberta Regional Office (SARO) in Calgary. Moench commenced his duties on January 1, 2007. He succeeds Dave Jeary, who has retired.

Member Services assists teachers with employment and professional issues, including termination, suspension, transfer, evaluation, and member discipline. It also provides organizational assistance to locals and trains local officers and school representatives.

In his new position, Moench is responsible for the overall operation of SARO and for the assignment of field service and caseload to other SARO staff. He will assist in professional conduct investigations and board of reference appeals; make presentations and give workshops to Association groups and university education classes; handle teacher and administrator personnel problems; provide legal assistance; help to resolve conflicts; and serve on committees.

Moench has worked for the ATA since March 2001. His teaching career began in 1978 in Calgary where he coordinated English as a Second Language (ESL) programs at several Calgary high schools. He has been actively involved in his profession, serving locally on the Calgary Public executive before being elected as a district representative for Calgary City. He also served as president of the Calgary Public Teachers, the largest teacher local in Alberta. He was also active on the board of directors of Alberta Teachers of English as a Second Language, Teaching English as a Second Language in Canada, and the ATA’s English as a Second Language Council.

Moench holds Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education degrees from the University of Calgary. He received a Master of Arts in Language Studies from Lancaster University in the United Kingdom and a certificate in conflict resolution from Mount Royal College in Calgary.
