Cuba, Sí!
School children in Havana, Cuba, take a break between classes.
Cuba’s adult literacy rate (age 15 and over) is 99.3 per cent (United Nations, Millennium Development Goals Indicator, June 2006). All private educational institutions were nationalized by the Cuban government in 1961, at which time a state-directed education system was introduced. School attendance is compulsory for children aged 6 to 15. Education in Cuba is free from elementary to university. Upon graduating from basic secondary education, students choose between pre-university education, and technical and professional education.—Photo by Raymond Gariépy
