Helping Haitian students
The Help Haiti campaign began in 2005 when seven schools in Alberta took part. Last year, that number increased to 72. This year, from May 14–June 15, students are invited to participate in the 2007 Help Haiti campaign. Up to one million children cannot attend school in Haiti. The government can’t afford to pay for education, with the result that 95 per cent of parents in Haiti have to pay tuition for their children. With the national unemployment rate close to 80 per cent and the majority of the population living on less than $1 per day, many families can’t afford the cost of education. The core activity of the campaign involves collecting 25 cents from each student in a participating school and taking the money to an ATB Branch anywhere in the province and depositing it into the Help Haiti account. A downloadable form is available on the Yéle Haiti website (www.yele.org/projects/help-haiti) or send an e-mail to helphaiti@yele.org and the form will be sent in reply. The provincial director for Help Haiti is Mikky Locke. Telephone: (780) 849-4754 or e-mail: helphaiti@yele.org.
