Be it resolved …
Trevor Smith (left), a teacher with Edmonton Public Teachers Local, delivers an emergent resolution during the opening session of the Alberta Teachers’ Association’s (ATA) 90th Annual Representative Assembly (ARA) held in Edmonton on May 19 and 20. The resolution calls upon teachers to unite against the government’s attempts to create divisions among teachers; to celebrate the ATA’s commitments to serving the public interest as both a professional organization and a union; to call upon the minister of education to respect and acknowledge the contribution of teachers to public education in Alberta; and, to call upon the minister of education to honour the premier’s mandate to find a reasonable and lasting solution to the unfunded liability of the teachers’ pension plan. Smith’s resolution followed Education Minister Ron Liepert’s (right) speech to delegates. See Resolution 214A, under Resolutions approved at 2007 ARA.—Photos by Tim Johnston
