Highlights of the Provincial Executive Council Meeting (PEC) held May 5 and 6, 2005, at Barnett House in Edmonton.

  1. Named members to the School Administrator Issues and Concerns Committee, which was established at Council’s meeting of April 7 and 8, 2005.
  2. Approved a resolution for submission to the 2005 Annual Representative Assembly (ARA), rejecting the bargaining model approved by the Alberta School Boards Association and approved a parallel resolution for submission to the 2005 ARA; namely, that the ATA offer to work with the government of Alberta to achieve improvements in collective bargaining in education.
  3. Approved a resolution for -submission to the 2005 ARA with the objective of raising awareness among elected public officials of the desirability that the Government of Alberta retire the unfunded liability of the Teachers’ Pension Plan.
  4. Approved two further resolutions for submission to the 2005 ARA concerning computer adaptive testing and classroom assessment.
  5. Approved a resolution for submission to the 2005 ARA that the ATA make representation to the government to halt the further proliferation of teacher preparation programs in the province.
  6. Concluded that the bargaining objectives of the teachers of Greater North Central Francophone Education Region No. 2 are consistent with Association guidelines.
  7. Directed specialist councils to establish a distinct registration fee (at least twice the normal registration fee) for central office staff members who opted out of active membership in the ATA.
  8. Endorsed the publication "A Guide to Comprehensive PD Planning" to promote a process for PD planning that is consistent with ATA policy and raise the standard for PD planning.
  9. Named four recipients of ATA fellowships and scholarships.
  10. Received the report of a hearing committee concerning a member who pleaded guilty to one charge of unprofessional conduct and imposed on the member the penalty of a letter of reprimand.
  11. Approved the financial statements for the month of March 2005 and reorganized the distribution of sparsity and distance grants.
