Highlights of the Provincial Executive Council (PEC) meeting held April 7 and 8, 2005, at Barnett House in Edmonton.

Jerome Ell

  1. Reviewed the report of the Blue Ribbon Panel’s fifth meeting and reviewed survey responses to the panel’s document: Leading for Learning: An Interim Report and Recommendations.
  2. Established the School Administrator Issues and Concerns Committee, defined its duties and determined its membership eligibility.
  3. Determined to invite the three newly elected Council members for 2005/07 to the May PEC meeting to address the matter of electing a past president, a position that will be vacant as of July 1, 2005.
  4. Authorized that $10,000 be forwarded through the Canadian Teachers’ Federation in support of the rebuilding of schools in Sri Lanka as part of teachers’ involvement in tsunami relief.
  5. Allocated $5,000 to support the Friends of Medicare 2005 conference on health care reform in Calgary.
  6. Allocated $337.50 to support the University of Alberta Students’ Union Legal Activist Collective in obtaining Harry Glasbeek for its Speakers Series.
  7. Directed that a letter be sent to the minister of education to express the Association’s concerns regarding the two-form Math 30 examinations administered in January 2005.
  8. Affirmed an approach to bargaining for upcoming meetings with the minister of education.
  9. Reviewed a strategic communication and advocacy plan for addressing the unfunded liability of the teachers’ pension plan.
  10. Approved the production of a pen, as part of Alberta’s 2005 centennial celebrations, by the Committee on Public Education for ARA delegates—each pen inscribed with the message Public Education: Proud Legacy. Inspired Future!
  11. Received reports on the status of preparations for the Association’s 2005 Annual Representative Assembly.
  12. Approved an initiative to restructure and redefine the Association’s political action and local political engagement programs.
  13. Revised membership categories in specialist council constitutions effective immediately, determining that membership in a specialist council is not available to central office personnel who have opted for associate membership in the Association or for non-membership.
  14. Approved the financial statements for the months of January and February 2005.
