Highlights of the Provincial Executive Council meeting held May 7 and 8, 2001, at Barnett House in Edmonton.
Harlan James - Approved in principle, for presentation to the 2001 Annual Representative (ARA), an action plan to respond to the Government of Alberta's recently announced budget.
- Included in the schedule for the 2001 ARA, a delegate session at the Alberta legislature to protest the provincial budget.
- Endorsed in principle and referred to staff for further development a 10-point action plan designed to educate teachers and parents about the inadequacies of the current achievement testing program and to involve stakeholders in developing an acceptable alternative to achievement testing.
- Directed that the Association urge its convention associations, specialist councils and local professional development committees to avoid offering sessions that support achievement testing.
- Agreed to (a) contribute $10,000 to the Alberta Assessment Consortium for the purpose of undertaking a study designed to identify assessment practices that are most beneficial for students and (b) name three teachers to represent the ATA on the advisory committee overseeing the study.
- Endorsed a proposal by the John Humphrey Centre for a project entitled "A Guide to Teaching and Learning about Human Rights: Promoting Human Rights Education in Canadian Schools."
- Directed the Teacher Education and Certification Committee to study the implication of the growing trend among universities to use online learning to deliver graduate programs.
- Determined that the bargaining objectives of teachers in Calgary Roman Catholic Separate School District No. 1 are consistent with Association guidelines.
- Received the report of a Professional Conduct Committee, which imposed the penalty of a one-year suspension of membership and a recommendation for a one-year suspension of certification on a teacher found guilty on one charge of unprofessional conduct.
- Approved the committee and representation assignments of Provincial Executive Council for 2001/02.
- Approved the financial statements for the month of March 2001.
- Approved the names of nine teachers for inclusion in the Curriculum Name Bank.
