Q & A

What are the requirements for permanent certification?

J.S. Buski

Question: My principal has advised me that I need to take three additional courses before I can be recommended for permanent certification. I don't understand this. I have a BEd degree from an Alberta university and possess an interim professional certificate. I am currently in my second year of teaching at this school and my first-year evaluations were very positive. Can you clarify this for me?

Answer: It's as puzzling to me as it is to you. Your principal appears to be somewhat misguided in the direction provided to you. Neither school administrators nor school jurisdictions establish the criteria for permanent certification. The requirements for permanent certification are determined by the Department of Education. The regulations state that you are eligible for permanent certification after two years of teaching experience and upon the recommendation of an acceptable officer. The term "acceptable officer" means the superintendent, not the principal. The recommendation for permanent certification is based on your successful teaching experience during those two years and not on additional requirements the school or system administration may wish to impose. If you encounter any further difficulties with this, please contact a member of executive staff at Barnett House or SARO (Southern Alberta Regional Office).
