The Education News Writers and Photographers of Alberta Awards
Alberta’s newspapers play an important role in presenting current educational issues and in raising public awareness about education and how it works.
The Alberta Teachers’ Association recognizes excellence in educational journalism and photography by presenting annual awards, known as the Education News Writers and Photographers of Alberta Awards. The winning writers and photographers receive certificates of merit and cash prizes. Their publishers receive engraved plaques that honour the newspaper’s contributions to excellence in educational journalism.
The Association makes awards in four categories:
- Journalism in a weekly newspaper (four stories constitute an entry)
- Journalism in a daily newspaper (four stories constitute an entry)
- Photography in a weekly newspaper (one to four photos constitute an entry)
- Photography in a daily newspaper (one to four photos constitute an entry)
Entries in the journalism category for both weekly and daily newspapers must include the original tearsheets from four articles covering educational issues published in 2009 and a copy of each article.
Entries in the photography category for both weekly and daily newspapers must include an original tearsheet for each photograph and a copy of each photograph. The photos must have been published in an Alberta newspaper in 2009.
The ATA will accept entries from editors, journalists, photographers and ATA locals. Entrants can either submit their own work or nominate a journalist or photographer whose work they admire.
Entries should be sent to the following address:
