From time to time, the Association responds to requests from the Canadian Teachers’ Federation for immediate assistance to teachers or their organizations in developing nations. The Association provided funding for the African Defense Fund that assisted black teachers in South Africa during the time of apartheid; supported a campaign to release Mexican teachers who were illegally incarcerated; funded a major relief program for teachers in Honduras and Nicaragua who were affected by Hurricane Mitch; and delivered financial assistance to teachers in El Salvador whose homes and schools were destroyed by an earthquake. More recently the ATA supported the Educational International Relief Initiative in Haiti.
