About the ATA

Mission and Objects

The Association is the professional organization of teachers in Alberta. Its objectives are set out in the Teaching Profession Act.

Governance

The Association is governed by an annual meeting known as the Annual Representative Assembly, which is composed of delegates representing the Association's 54 locals. Between annual meetings, business is transacted by an executive committee known as Provincial Executive Council.

Membership

All teachers employed by a school board in Alberta are required to become active members of the Association. Other teachers may join as associate members. Education students may join as student members.

Careers at the ATA

The Association employs about 150 permanent staff. Most work out of the Association's head office in Edmonton, but the Association also has an office in Calgary. In addition to hiring permanent employees, the Association occasionally requires staff to work on a casual basis.

Related Organizations

The Association works closely with its educational partners in Alberta as well as with teachers' organizations in other provinces.

History

The Alberta Teachers' Alliance was created in 1918. The passage of the Teaching Profession Act in 1936 changed the name of the Alliance to the Alberta Teachers' Association.

Who's Who?

The business of the Association is transacted by an executive committee of 20 persons known as Provincial Executive Council, which, in turn, oversees the work of the Association's approximately 150 staff members.

Upholding Professional Standards

The Association oversees both the professional conduct and the competence of teachers employed by school boards in Alberta. Anyone concerned about a teacher’s conduct or competence can initiate a complaint. The Association investigates each such complaint.

Catering and Room Rentals

The Association's headquarters at Barnett House in Edmonton contains a Conference and Audiovisual Centre, which can accommodate groups of up to 400 people
